Checking bond yields every day before picking a forex trade might sound excessive, but Kathy Lien of BKTraders.com says it’s one of the most reliable signals in the market. In fact, Kathy Lien is widely known for her insights into the relationship between yields and currency movements.
The basics: Currencies are interest-bearing instruments, so money flows toward whichever country offers the highest yield. When a central bank buys bonds, yields fall; when it tapers, yields rise. Kathy Lien watches the 10-year Treasury, German bund, and UK gilt most closely — rising US yields tend to support the dollar, falling yields weigh on it.
The correlation: On dollar-yen charts, yields consistently lead and price follows, holding across weekly, daily, and even hourly timeframes. If Treasury yields jump overnight, Kathy Lien looks to day trade long dollar; if they drop, she leans toward selling.
Tracking it: She builds a free TradingView watchlist with the US, German, and UK 10-year yield futures alongside the currency pairs she trades, so everything moves together on one screen. Additionally, Kathy Lien often shares updates about these trends in her posts and analysis.
