A Crowded Market Report review · COT-based contrarian trading research across 40+ markets · From $34/month
In this Crowded Market Report review, we look at one of the most unique and credentialed services in the trading education space built by a verified Market Wizard with over 20 consecutive profitable years, whose COT-based contrarian methodology is now available to retail traders for the first time.
Every platform we review goes through the same process:
- Instructor verification — trading history, qualifications, media presence and independently verifiable track record.
- Content review — methodology depth, format and practical applicability.
- Pricing and terms — full pricing structure, refund policy, recurring or hidden costs.
- Independent member feedback — cross-referenced across platforms outside the company’s own site.
- Community and support testing — response times and engagement quality, where access allows.
Trading outcomes depend on the individual trader. Our scores reflect the quality, credibility and value of the service itself, not a guarantee of results.
Crowded Market Report Review: Who’s Behind It
Jason Shapiro is a commodity trading advisor and hedge fund manager with more than 30 years of market experience. He was featured as the second chapter in Jack Schwager’s Unknown Market Wizards — the latest instalment of the legendary Market Wizards series — under the title “The Contrarian.”

His verified track record is exceptional: over 20 consecutive profitable years without a single losing one. At a 20% target volatility, his average annual compounded return is 34% with a maximum drawdown of less than half that figure. His Sortino ratio of 2.83 and monthly Gain to Pain ratio of 2.45 place him among the most risk-adjusted performers documented in the Schwager series. Notably, his returns are negatively correlated to stocks and other hedge funds — meaning he tends to make money when the consensus is losing it.
He began investing as a young man while living in Hong Kong, went through a decade of struggling results before finding his edge, and has traded professionally since the late 1990s. He has managed assets ranging from a few million to several hundred million dollars, running his current CTA as a one-man operation.
His trading is built entirely around a contrarian philosophy: fading overcrowded speculator positions using Commitment of Traders (COT) data as the primary signal rather than price action, chart patterns or technical indicators. He launched the Crowded Market Report community in January 2021 as a way of sharing the process publicly — and notably, all proceeds beyond running costs go to charity.

The flagship product is the weekly Crowded Market Report, published every Sunday before 3pm EST. Each issue covers specific market analysis, a summary section, COT setups, active positions and any trades made during the previous week — providing not just the data but the narrative context and reasoning behind Shapiro’s current positioning across 40-plus markets spanning equities, fixed income, currencies, commodities, precious metals, agricultural markets and crypto. Since the report’s inception in January 2021, only one issue has been missed — and that was due to a CFTC technical failure, not a lapse on Shapiro’s part.
Premium membership also includes two live calls per week with Jason, daily market recap videos from Monday through Thursday, full Discord access across CMR, crypto and stocks channels with intra-week trade updates, and the proprietary CMR Index — a 0-100 oscillator identifying crowded market setups — alongside 40-plus markets of COT charts available as TradingView indicators and an Excel file. A Standard tier at $34 a month on the annual plan provides access to the charts, index, TradingView indicators, daily recaps and weekly setups without the flagship weekly report or live calls — a genuinely useful entry point for traders who want to evaluate the data before committing to the full service.
Cost and Value
Premium membership runs $150 a month, $125 a month billed quarterly, or $100 a month on the annual plan. The Standard (charts and index) tier runs $50 a month or $34 a month annually. For the quality and pedigree of what is on offer — a verified Market Wizard’s live positioning, proprietary COT charts across 40-plus markets, two live calls per week and direct Discord access — the Premium tier is competitive with services that offer considerably less from instructors with considerably thinner credentials. The Standard tier at $34 a month annually is arguably the best value entry point in this review series for what it provides.
A free newsletter on Substack — Contrarian Market Insights — offers weekly COT charts, macro analysis and excerpts from the flagship report, which is an unusually generous sample of the full product and a sensible starting point before committing to a paid tier.
Community and Ongoing Support
Direct access to Jason Shapiro is a genuine feature of Premium membership, not a marketing claim. He is active in the Discord daily, participates in two live calls per week and responds to member questions — an unusual level of engagement from someone with his institutional background. The Discord community spans members trading futures, options, stocks, forex and crypto, and member reviews on Whop consistently give the service 4.9 out of 5. The charity element is also worth noting as a signal of intent: a fund manager who shares his live process and donates the proceeds is not primarily in the education business for commercial reasons, which changes the incentive structure in a way that distinguishes CMR from most services in this space.
Things to Know Before Joining
The COT report is published weekly and reflects positioning over a longer timeframe — the CMR methodology is most relevant for swing and position traders rather than day traders or scalpers looking for intraday signals. The contrarian approach also requires patience and psychological discipline: you are buying what everyone else is selling and selling what everyone else is buying, which means being wrong in the short term while the crowd continues to push in the same direction is a regular feature of the process rather than an exception. Shapiro addresses this directly and consistently — the methodology is not about being right immediately, it is about being right when the crowded trade eventually reverses.
The weekly report is also analytical rather than prescriptive — it provides the data, the context and Shapiro’s own positioning, but it does not tell subscribers exactly what to do. Traders who need precise entry, exit and stop-loss levels handed to them will need to combine the CMR framework with their own execution methodology.
Crowded Market Report Review: Who It Suits
Swing and position traders across any market who want to incorporate institutional positioning data into their process, filtered through the contrarian framework of one of the most consistently profitable traders documented in the Market Wizards series. The breakdown below covers fit by trading style in more detail.
| Futures Traders | Strong Fit | The COT report is most directly relevant to futures markets — Shapiro’s own CTA uses futures exclusively and the CMR process is built around futures positioning data. |
| Contrarian Traders | Strong Fit | The entire methodology is built around fading overcrowded speculator positions — if you are drawn to contrarian thinking, this is the most rigorous version of it available at retail price. |
| Multi-Market Coverage | Strong Fit | 40+ markets covered including equities, fixed income, currencies, commodities, crypto and more — one of the broadest COT-based market coverage sets available anywhere. |
| Macro / Positioning Focus | Strong Fit | The weekly report provides deep macro context and sentiment analysis alongside the positioning data — not just charts but a framework for understanding what the data means. |
| Forex Traders | Strong Fit | Currency positioning is one of the most widely covered areas in the CMR chart library — useful for both spot and futures forex traders. |
| Crypto Traders | Acceptable | Bitcoin and Ether futures positioning is included in the CMR coverage and Discord — crypto is a growing part of the service but not the historical core. |
| Technical-Only Traders | Acceptable | The CMR methodology complements rather than replaces technical analysis — used as a filter or confirmation tool it adds significant value, but it is not a standalone technical service. |
| Day Traders / Scalpers | Not the Focus | COT data is weekly and reflects longer-term positioning — the CMR process is most relevant for swing and position traders rather than intraday or short-term scalping approaches. |
